The feeling of opinion among the medical profession and skiing/snowboarding affiliations is that wearing ski helmets shouldn’t be made compulsory. This not only includes staff at Vail but also Breckenridge, Beaver Creek, Keystone and Heavenly. Also all youngsters under 12 attending Vail Resorts ski schools will be needed to wear a ski or snowboard helmet.
In Europe lots of the ski faculties are actively encouraging their ski and boarding instructors to wear helmets. Italy has led the way in Europe vis introducing a law making it mandatory for kids to wear a ski helmet.
Responding to the recent tragic situations on the ski slopes some ski and snowboard hardware rental corporations have been started to market the use of helmets. Plenty include a free ski or snowboarding helmet in any rental package a customer purchases from them. Also some ski tour operators are offering a free ski helmet with vacation bookings to attempt to promote responsible and safe skiing and riding. Ski and snowboard shops have also noticed a marked increase in the quantity of ski helmet sales following these high profile events.
Plenty in the skiing and snowboarding community believe that the statement by Vail Resorts is the thin end of the wedge.
